Depression in children is more rare than in adults however children can also become depressed.

Some common symptoms for depression in children can be:

  • Anger or irritability.
  • Persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness.
  • Social withdrawal.
  • Increased sensitivity to rejection.
  • Changes in appetite — either increased or decreased.
  • Sleeplessness or excessive sleep.
  • Crying or vocal outbursts
  • Difficulty concentrating.
  • Low energy or fatigue.
  • Pain in the body that does not respond to treatment.
  • Loss of interest in hobbies, friendships, school or extracurricular activities.
  • Low self esteem and/or guilt
  • Impaired thinking or concentration.
  • Excessive thoughts of death
  • Thoughts of suicide.

If a child is experiencing some depression it should be closely monitored especially if your child is having troubles at school.

Bullying can be a common trigger for depression and even small frustrations can pile up every day and cause a child to feel that life is too difficult.

Academic demands may cause pressure on a child especially if there are other issues like favoritism, bullying or discrimination going on inside the classroom. As a parent it is important for you to recognize if your child is suffering from depression.

Below are some of the more obvious symptoms for depression in children and a short description of each.

  • Sadness

    Kids may be sad sometimes especially when you do not yield to their demands. But sadness in case of depression is remarkable enough that you would likely notice the difference in your child’s mood.

  • Irritability which may last for weeks or even months

    Tantrums are normal especially if kids had a really bad day or if they woke up at the wrong side of the bed. But if they are irritable for no reason at all then it is time to seek more answers regarding their behaviors.

  • Significant alteration in sleeping patterns

    You must be watchful for danger signs of depression if your child can no longer sleep well at night. Insomnia is not normal especially in kids.
